Specifications

Thorough, succinct, accurate specifications are crucial to the success of any project. They are the foundation upon which the project is built. In tandem with drawings and calculations, the specifications clearly state exactly what is to be done, how it will perform, how it will be accomplished, and to what standards. Carefully written specifications can be a great asset in that they can help clients avoid the need for change orders or disputes. Specifications that are well organized, succinct, and up-to-date and without “loopholes” can mean the difference between a successful and profitable project and costly, time consuming problems.

GTWC staff includes writers with many years of specification writing experience. Ms. Greenland is a member of Construction Specifications Institute and GTWC staff is experienced in producing specifications utilizing CSI guidelines and formatting. Using the CSI guidelines assures you that your specifications will be written to the uniform, generally accepted industry standard and, therefore, easily understood and utilized by suppliers and contractors.

GTWC can take your present specifications and work within your format or can convert them into the CSI format. GTWC will also make sure the specifications are written to fulfill contractual requirements, include proper semantics, and will verify that all cited standards and references are correct and up-to-date in conjunction with your technical and/or legal staff.

Reports, Technical and Training Manuals

GTWC can assist with writing and editing of manuals (e.g., operation and maintenance manuals). We can assist in developing the base text, will work with your staff and vendors to integrate comments and information into the documents, and can use these documents to help develop training materials (see Training Support).

Utilizing your information, or after performing research for you, GTWC will prepare reports customized to the audience for which they are intended. Presenting information in a way that is tailored to the audience will ensure that your message is conveyed clearly and that you will get a positive response. Our professional staff can also take information from multiple sources and disciplines within your firm and create a document that “speaks with one voice” giving the audience a sense of cohesion and uniformity.

We can assist you with graphs, charts, photographs or any other illustrations and figures needed to present a clear, cohesive message.

Editing And Proofreading

While not the most glamorous part of a project, editing and proofreading are nonetheless extremely important. Very often, these steps are not performed due to a lack of time or because it is difficult for authors to edit and proofread their own work. Often the authors are not trained in grammar or formatting. Having an objective person trained in grammar and technical writing perform a review of your documents can make the difference between a mediocre document and a great one. At best, documents that contain misspellings, grammatical errors, unclear text or inaccuracies can reflect badly on your firm. At worst, these documents can cause legal problems, lost contracts and lost revenue.

When an author knows that documents will be reviewed by a qualified editor/proofreader, they can spend more time thinking about high-quality content and less time worrying about grammar.
