GOVERNOR RENDELL SAYS CONSTRUCTION RESUMES ON BRADYS LAKE DAM
RESTORATION OF POPULAR MONROE COUNTY FACILITY WILL ATTRACT MORE TOURISTS, FISHING ACTIVITY
HARRISBURG -- Governor Edward G. Rendell today said construction has resumed on the replacement dam for Bradys Lake in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, which, once completed, will add to the quality of life and economic vibrancy of the Pocono region.
“I am happy to say that construction on the Bradys Lake dam is again underway,” said Governor Rendell. “Bradys Lake is a recreational treasure and one of the few public-access lakes in Pennsylvania’s celebrated Pocono region.
“Pennsylvania’s scenic lands and waters are an important driver of the commonwealth’s economy. Rebuilding the dam and restoring this regional attraction adds to the quality of life for residents and attracts visitors. It is also a popular destination among anglers, adding to a recreational fishery that contributes $1.6 billion to the state’s economy every year.”
Governor Rendell released $2 million in 2003 to rebuild the dam. He later directed an additional $800,000 for dam construction and rehabilitation of an access road. Work started in 2005 but the contract with the original construction company was terminated in October 2006 when the project was approximately 40 percent complete.
The commonwealth has successfully negotiated with the bonding company, XL Specialty Insurance Company, to complete the project. XL Specialty Insurance is now the contractor and it has hired a subsidiary of Haines & Kibblehouse Inc. as a subcontractor to help complete the project.
Work on the dam, which is owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, is expected to be completed by early November.
“The Game Commission is extremely pleased that this project is moving forward,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “While Bradys Lake Dam is situated on state game lands, it has long been a beautiful tourist destination and regional asset. Throughout this entire process the Game Commission remained committed to working in partnership with local leaders to save Bradys Lake. However, given the agency’s financial constraints, there was no way possible for us to complete this project on our own.”
The Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Waterways Engineering designed the replacement dam. The new structure will be built with roller-compacted concrete, which is not only stronger than the original earthen material but it also significantly reduces the need for required maintenance. A larger spillway will bypass floodwaters equivalent to 36 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, a greatly enhanced safety feature.
The original dam was built in 1914 to provide ice for refrigeration. However, the aging dam eventually became dangerous and did not meet modern safety standards.
Responding to an order from DEP, the Game Commission drew down the lake and breached the dam in September 2003.
“This is a state-of-the art dam that will protect the community and return Bradys Lake to recreational use,” said DEP Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty. “We expect this will put a smile on the face of fishermen, boaters and hikers, as well as the owners of the local bait-and-tackle shops, sporting goods stores, restaurants and other related businesses.”
The construction subcontractor, Locust Ridge Quarry, a division of Skippack-based Haines & Kibblehouse, has already begun repairing the access roadway, ordering materials and preparing the site for construction activities.
